History of St John’s Community Care
St John’s Community Care was established as an activity of The Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia in Cairns in 1997.
In 1993 the Greek Orthodox Parish of Cairns was inaugurated by His Eminence Archbishop Stylianos, and conducted the Blessing and Opening of the Church of St John the Baptist the following year. At that time His Eminence stated, “the Parish of St John would not only serve the needs of its own Parishioners but would serve the wider community”.
In 1996 the Redlynch Daycare Centre and Early Childhood Development Centres were opened, and were followed by the opening of the St John’s Respite Centre on the site in 1997. Other sites soon followed in Kuranda (1998), Gordonvale (1999), Mareeba (2004), Thursday Island (2005), Innisfail (2008), and Townsville and Taigum (2014).
The community services of St John’s Community Care started delivering activities to frail aged and young people with disabilities from the former Parish Manse at Redlynch Centre in 1997. At that time After-hours Respite services were provided to 12 people and was overseen by a part time coordinator. Later, ten Community Aged Care Packages were provided under the auspice of Ethnic Community Care Links Inc in Townsville. Gradually more services were added, with extra respite services, the Multicultural Aged Care Program, Project 300, Home Assist Secure and the Cairns Recreation and Social Club Program all commencing before 2000.
Since 2000, HACC Home Maintenance began, fifteen new aged care packages were approved, a Dementia Support Group was established, along with a Disability Support Advisory Group. Short-term overnight respite started in Gordonvale, Inclusive Partners and FNQ Home Modifications began and CACP’s and In-Home respite. Transport services began, and the Young Lifestyle Program was funded.
Today, St John’s Community Care has continued to grow and expand. St. John’s has always worked toward identifying unmet needs in the community and how those needs can be be provided. It’s been an exciting time since 1997.
